Sarika Randive (34) is one of the first woman taxi-drivers of Mumbai. A child-bride from Solapur village, she was married off at the age of twelve and had her first child a year after. Determined to support her husband, she worked at a sugarcane field, picked up garbage and what not. During COVID-19 lockdown she lost her job as a housekeeping staff but her zeal made her learn driving and obtain a licence. Undaunted in the face of bullying from other taxi-drivers, Randive stood firm in a profession where a female face is a rare sight. Two years since her first trip, Randive’s courage has now helped her gain the moniker of “Gateway chi Rani (queen of Gateway)”, thanks to her frequent trips to and from the favourite tourist spot in Mumbai, Gateway of India.
